Whale Watching

• Spectacular whale watching tours
• Southern Right Whales
• Hermanus and the Whale Festival
• Incredible land-based whale viewing

The Western Cape offers some of the best land and ocean-based whale watching in the world. Whilst staying at one of the Last Word Properties, why not take a day tour to the coastal whale-watching town of Hermanus or simply drive along the False Bay Coast during the whale season (July - October) and witness whales breaching and playing from the shore.

Southern Right Whales are particularly entertaining as they come close to shore to calve their young and also to mate. They are also very playful, breaching and slapping their tails much to the enjoyment of many a spectator. The elevated roads and accessible parking areas along the False Bay and Atlantic coastlines provide excellent viewing sites. Other whales which can be witnessed in the waters off the Cape include the Hunchback Whale, the Humphrey's Whale and even the odd Killer Whale.

Further along the coast, the town of Hermanus is considered the best spot for land-based whale watching. In September, the annual Whale Festival is a hive of activity with many shows, attractions and craft markets on offer in the town, with the whales being the main attraction of course.

Please note that whale watching activities are only available for guests staying at any of the Last Word Retreats.
