Following the success of our first sold out wine evening with Klein Constantia winemaker Matthew Day (see here for pictures) demand for places at our next is sure to be high.

Our second evening will take place on the 6th of December 2013 and once again, just 30 spaces are available. The evening begins at 18h00 for 18h30 with a welcome drink. From 18h30 to 19h45 De Grendel cellar master Charles Hopkins will conduct a presentation of many different De Grendel wines. Dinner will follow at 20h00 and will once again be served by Fresh Flavours, the new providers of convenient, ready-made gourmet meals and accompanied by various De Grendel wines supplied by the wine farm for the evening. Please note that a vegetarian meal option is available but must be pre-ordered. The evening rounds off with finger desserts, tea and coffee.

Charles Hopkins is De Grendel’s inaugural winemaker and one of South Africa’s most highly regarded winemakers both in this country and abroad. He is also a member of the 36-member Cape Winemakers Guild. His list of successes and awards includes numerous double golds at the Veritas Awards. He studied Cellar Technology at Elsenburg Agricultural College and has worked in California, his beloved Bordeaux, and a number of well-known South African farms.

De Grendel is synonymous with quality. Originally used for the breeding of Arab horses, the Graaffs also breed award-winning cattle and sheep. This established farm is now home to Holstein stud cattle, sheep, grain and vines. It was Sir David’s insight that injected new life into the established farm and within just a few years, De Grendel’s varietals were firmly established as key players in the South African wine industry with a number of accolades to their name.
The farm has been in the Graaff family for three generations. Baronet, Sir David Graaff, retired politician and leading wine farmer, continues the legacy left by his father and grandfather before him. The historic De Grendel farm remains the heart and soul of the family, assisted by members of staff whose roots on the property go back five generations. Sir David has built a reputation for upliftment in the community, supporting farm labourers and their families and encouraging education for their children.
