The Zeitz Museum of Contempory Art Africa

Cape Town boasts the largest museum of contemporary African art in the world – and this construction of architectural flair has been recognized on a global level as the winner for the ArchDaily’s Building of the Year 2018 award in the cultural architecture category.

The Zeitz Museum of Contempory Art Africa

The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront opened in 2017.

The striking design, by Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studios in London, focusses on the industrial feel of the old working silo. Visitors will notice the industrial blend of concrete, glass and steel. Its executive director and chief curator is Mark Coetzee.

This public, not-for-profit museum was commissioned through a public/private partnership between the V&A Waterfront and German businessman, Jochen Zeitz, whose extensive art collection can be viewed here. It is arguably one of the world's leading collections of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, comprising works by renowned artists Chris Ofili, Kudzanai Chiurai, Kehinde Wiley, Glenn Ligon, Marlene Dumas, Wangechi Mutu, and Julie Mehretu.

With unparalleled vistas over The Mother City, the 200-seater Zeitz MOCAA Food, inspired by local ingredients, offers unique dishes with authentic South African flavours. The museum entry fee applies. To book phone: 021 001 1022 / email: info@zeitzmocaafood.com

Pop into the Zeitz MOCAA Museum Pop-up Shop for an interesting selection of irresistible little treasures and unique collectables.

ArchDaily founded in March 2008, serves as architects' main source for tools, information and inspiration. It’s said to be the world's most visited architecture website.

The museum is open every day (except Tuesdays) from 10h00 until 18h00. Entry is R180 -  under-18s gain free entry on presentation of a valid ID, and on Wednesday mornings there is free entry for African citizens on presentation of a valid ID.
