Oil Painting Workshop at Last Word Constantia

We are excited to announce two oil painting workshops with Alice Toich, hosted at Last Word Constantia in the serene garden surrounded by lush florals and like minded creatives.

“My name is Alice Angela Toich and I am an artist, baker and gardener as well as writer. I have been painting in oils for over 15 years. I have exhibited in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Istanbul and at many art festivals around South Africa. My latest exhibition in October 2020 in Elgin was in association with Elgin Open Gardens and encompassed an exhibition of paintings I created in the area as well as a workshop in the garden. But I wasn’t always able to paint outdoors. Passionate about the old masters and great paintings of the past, I found much of the art classes I attend in South Africa lacked a basis in classical training and the solid basis of teaching actual painting techniques. My desire to learn took me overseas to some of the unique ateliers and schools in Europe and America that are still preserving and continuing the traditional methods of painting. It changed my life! As for the first time I felt I was becoming equipped with information I could use to make the artworks I always dreamed of. In recent years I have become increasingly passionate about painting ‘en plein air’ outdoors surrounded by nature. What better place to return to and base my studio and painting practice than the beautiful Cape? Now I am ready to share what I have learnt to others that seek the knowledge. “

In this first workshop you will:

Learn from a live demo how to set up your outdoor easel, palette and canvas so that you never feel lost or unsure.  

Discuss colour and light theories.  

Learn how to mix up a string of colours to best prepare you for any scene you aim to capture: especially the tricky greens of the great outdoors. We will discuss the best materials to use including mediums and brushes.  

Learn how to compose an elegant and simple still life painting or compose a scene from Nature. The basics and importance of a solid structure underlying in your painting.  

Learn the basic structures of florals and how to translate them to the canvas.  

Tips of how to best prepare your own canvases and wooden panels at home so you can continue your journey!  

Leave with an original work of art you can hang in your home.

Learn how to compose an elegant and simple portrait painting. The basics and importance of a solid structure underlying in your painting especially in regard to anatomical truths.  

Learn the basic structures of the face and how to interpret the forms.  

Tips of how to best prepare your own canvases and wooden panels at home so you can continue your journey.
