The result? We founded our first-ever 'beyond boutique' hotel, Last Word Franschhoek. Our guests tell us they love this residence for its superb location on buzzy Huguenot Street; walk out the front door, and you're heartbeats from the action! The top reason they visit (or return) is because of our amazing team of long-standing 'Last Word originals'.One such stalwart is Franklin Mentoor, our charming, dapper Assistant General Manager. With the stunning wraparound views of South Africa's gourmet capital from the viewing deck as their all-embracing backdrop, Nicky caught up with Franklin over a delicious coffee and croissant. Our Lovely People, Lovely Places feature series introduces our wonderful team of home-grown hoteliers, all of whom are at the heart of our ‘why’.
NC: Franklin, it's so good to be back in the valley. And, so good to see you. We've known each other for a long time. For the benefit of our readers, how long have you been working at Last Word Franschhoek, Franklin?
FM: It's always lovely to see you, Nicky; thanks for stopping by. I have been working at the Last Word for seventeen years- my entire working life.
NC: And, we are lucky to have you! What is your favourite part of your working day at the hotel?
FM: My favourite part of the day is in the morning. Anytime I guide my guest in the right direction to start their day. We enjoy good conversation; I make them feel comfortable, solve problems or cater to their needs.
NC: I can see you love what you do, Franklin. Hospitality is in your blood and you’ve been with us since the first days. Have you ever had any guests who have not wanted to check out?
FM: I've often had a guest who stayed for quite some time and then decided they wanted to extend their stay by two or three more days. The reason is the excellent service from The Last Word Franschhoek team because this Paradise is a home away from home.
NC: What is your best insider tip for any guest coming to stay?
FM: My best insider tip is that when a guest comes to stay, I instil confidence that they are in good hands.
NC: What does 'Beyond Boutique' mean to you and your team?
FM: 'Beyond Boutique' means I do better than my best and beyond what I expect. To better myself and inspire my team to learn so that we may change guests' lives.
